Djokovic Looks to Continue Streak at Sony Ericsson

Red-hot Novak Djokovic puts his 20 match winning streak on the line tonight in a second-round match against Denis Istomin at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Nole, like all the seeds, received a first-round bye. The Serb, then ranked No. 3, extended his unbeaten run by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Sunday. The day before, with the ATP Tour No. 2 ranking on the line, Djokovic defeated Roger Federer to exchange places with the Swiss star when the new rankings came out on Monday. Djokovic’s win over Federer made him the third player to defeat both Nadal and Federer in the same tournament on two occasions. Nikolay Davydenko and David Nalbandian are the other two. Djokovic, who also won at Melbourne and Dubai earlier this year, seeks to become the seventh player to win Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back — a very taxing proposition. “I guess it’s hard to win back-to-back [ATP World Tour] Masters 1000s in general because you have a lot of good players in the early rounds,” said Federer, who achieved the Indian Wells-Miami double in 2005 and 2006. “You have no excuse not having enough time off, because there is enough time so you can get ready. It just seems like I guess here and in Indian Wells usually everybody is playing pretty well, because the season is underway for a couple of months. But then again, if you’re hot, like Novak at the moment, or me back a few years ago when I won back-to-back Indian Wells and Miami, you could do it.” Djokovic lucked out in getting a good draw. Placed in the bottom half, with Nadal and Federer in the top, he potentially faces No. 16 seed Viktor Troicki in the fourth round, No. 5 Andy Murray in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Robin Soderling in the semifinals. “To be honest, I’m playing great and I’m feeling good on the court,” Djokovic said. “The results are coming with the hard work that I’m putting in with my team, so my priority for the next period and the continuation of this season is to try to stay healthy and try to continue on playing well.”
